Despite its small size, Greece has a very interesting geomorphology and a remarkable natural enviroment.
With 449 recorded bird species so far, Greece-compared to other European countries- is a region of special and multilevel ornithological importance and its not seasonal or accidental.
The lake of Kastoria, a Natura 2000 site, a Wildlife refuge, is considered to be a wetland of great importance for breeding, wintering and migratory species. The lake of kastoria is one of the most beautiful in Greece and also one of the most important for birdlife. A colonies of Pygmy Cormorants can be found at the city centre, Dalmatians Pelicans, Great White Pelicans are very common visitors during the breeding season, the former being also very common in winter. Even waterfowl species, that in other areas are very shy, have become accustomed to human presence and can be seen very close to the shore. The surrounding landscape is also fascinating: the mountain ranges of Gramos and Vitsi hold large numbers of woodland and alpine bird species as well as numerous rare flowers.
While the lakes of the broader area such as Prespa, Zazari, Heimaditida and Petra are home to dalmatian pelicans, great white pelicans, cormorants and wild ducks.
